Honey Chai Easter cookies

The first time I listened to Nirvana was in my cousin’s bedroom. My cousins were quite a few years older and the coolest kids I knew. I got hooked listening to Nevermid and listened to Come As You Are on a loop. I wanted to tell everyone about it. I was a little late to the party though, this was in 98, so my enthusiasm received a lot of eye rolling because Nevermid was so last year, or so the cool kids told me. Eighteen years later I receive somewhat the same reaction when a mere few months ago I expressed my love for Chai lattes. Chai tea, according to snobs around me, was old news. Chai was out, turmeric was in. Although as a teenager I liked to imitate my cousins, these days I no longer feel embarrassed for not having tried all the latest trends. So better late than ever, I have started to experiment with chai spices.  I am no expert, but I played with the spices combination in this recipe at least 10 times now, and it is truly addictive. I am not moving on to turmeric any time soon, I am truly in love with

Easy peanut butter ice cream

As a petite girl I often have to have my clothes altered to fit me better. I was sharing this with a friend and said I would love to learn how to sew so that I could do it all myself. Said friend was baffled, “why would you want to do that? It is too fiddly to do and hard to learn”. Yes, but it means I can alter clothes to fit me…I even started to dream of making my own dress. I can understand my friend’s line of thought, it is much easier to go shopping for a dress, or even do it as I often do, shop online.  I love that our modern world offers us so much convenience, giving us the time to go do other things we enjoy. But to be very blunt here, I don’t get people that don’t get the feeling of achievement when creating something, be it made of fabric or a nice chocolate cake.These days you can find absolutely anything that your heart desires in a shop, so it doesn’t surprise me that homemade items are highly appreciated presents. I can cross the road and buy a tub of ice cream for less money than

Maize thumbprint biscuits [GF]

You may say that these biscuits look Christmassy but they are actually a childhood favourite of mine. I did come across the original recipe whilst on Christmas break at my parents house and I was so happy I did.  In Brazil they are often sold as little balls that melt in your mouth, I remember like it was yesterday eating them at my grandma’s house.  The original recipe belongs to my aunt, but I modified it as it asked for margarine and I never, ever buy margarine. So I tested it 3 times and settled on this recipe. Easy, quick, inexpensive and gluten free. It’s best served with a cup of milky coffee. Maize thumbprint biscuits (makes 36 biscuits) 150g coconut oil 1 egg 200g condensed milk 350g cornflour Seedless raspberry jam Icing sugar to dust 1. Preheat the oven to 170C (fan). With an electric whisk beat together the coconut oil, egg and condensed milk until all ingredients are well incorporated. 2. Slowly add the cornflour, folding with a spoon between additions. 3. Make little balls with the dough and place them on a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper. At this point do your thumb print right in

Butternut squash soup with crispy seeds

Growing up I was a very fussy eater. I never forget being told by one of my aunts that all the food I wasted throughout my life would be waiting for me to eat it when I die. Grim, right? And a little mean. But recently I have been thinking a lot about food waste. Food is a powerful thing and at the moment it’s being used by rebels in Syria to keep civilians under control. It hurts to hear that children are eating grass in order to not feel hungry. I know people differ greatly in their views on war but I felt so frustrated that I am not able to fly over there and help. But there are other ways to bring awareness to this issue. In Europe we wasted 89 million tons of food in 2013 and the UK is the worst offender. You are now thinking that it’s the big supermarkets fault, right? Wrong. Household waste is the biggest contributor to these numbers. It’s hard to hear that when so many are starving we’re taking food for granted. So it starts at home, maybe many of us can’t physically go there and help them but we

German liver patê and butter apples on rosemary crackers

So bloody excited to share this ridiculously easy recipe, inspired by our ingredient exchange part II. I needed some excitement in my life. It has consisted pretty much of watching Brazilian soap operas online and eating leftovers. This has been mainly triggered by the fact that my other-half has been away at sea for the last 6 weeks. Sounds romantic? In reality it is not so much. The house has been a tip and when you’re just cooking for one I feel very little motivation to whip up exciting meals so my diet has mainly consisted of shop bought sushi and quick omelettes. This made me realise that what drives me to cook and try out new recipes is having other people to cook for. Why did I have no motivation when it comes to cooking for myself? Talk about self-love, eh? This handmade German patê that Karla sent me jolted my memory, it reminded of the happiness that comes with indulgent food for one. And it wasn’t even that hard to make the accompaniments: a simple cracker recipe based on one by Jamie Oliver and warm buttered apples.  The crackers also come with good news for our dairy-free friends as it is

Dark chocolate cookies {GF and DF}

I feel I should apologise for being a bit absent lately. Although we’ve been posting our recipes I don’t feel I have been looking after our blog as much as I did a couple months ago, and haven’t been as active reading the food blogs I enjoy reading so much. I blame my wedding, it has taken over my life. Not in a bridezilla way, I actually wish I had enough money to pay someone to just do the organising for me because it has become so stressful. Do a DYI wedding, they said. It will be fun, they said. They were wrong. Especially when you have to work two jobs on top of the planning. This blog is how I de-stress but it has been hard to have the time to test all the recipe ideas I have (and I have many). And this little project me and Karla have going was so much fun, it reminds me of how much I love food blogging. We made a deal we would send each other traditional ingredients from our adopted countries (England and Germany) to each other and try to figure out how to use them in recipes. This is the first post
