Homemade lemon sprinkles + birthday giveaway

It honestly does not feel like it has already been a year, but here it is: this week our blog has turned 1! I think both Karla and I can say that we have learnt a lot along the way and have met other lovely fellow bloggers. So we are definitely looking forward to more birthdays to come. This week it’s not about the cake, it’s about the sprinkles. Since I saw this post on Food52 I have been dying to try it and try all the different flavours under the Sun. I also devoured these vanilla cupcakes (I am in fact eating one right now with a cup of coffee) and it’s all thanks to Jemma’s cookbook.  It’s our birthday but we want to share this moment with you so we’re giving the book to a lucky reader so you can try the cupcakes and these stupidly easy lemon flavoured sprinkles on top. Check out the bottom of the page for details. Lemon sprinkles 260g icing sugar 1 egg white Food colouring (I think Silver Spoon are the best) 1 tsp lemon flavouring Finely grated zest of 1 lemon Piping bags and tips (I used Wilton #3 but #2

Amaretto sour

I am not a big drinker, have never been, in Brazil growing up in family gathering everyone just seemed to drink beer. It was too hot for wine. Also soon after I became of legal age I moved to England so my experience of alcoholic drinks really started here. And to say the English enjoy alcohol is an understatement. In college the boys mainly stick to Ales, Lagers and Bitters while girls dilute the alcohol in shandies and spritzers and your good old alcopops. University was a bit more hardcore, people would buy cheap vodka and cheap wine and make all kinds of concoctions with cranberry juice and coke and get whole pitchers of Vodka Red Bull. Jack Daniels was an absolute treat at a house party.  Found a bit tough to fit in as I don’t particularly like the taste of alcohol, I find beer and wine unbearable and don’t even get me started on people drinking stuff neat. I was once flirting with a boy at a party and he thought of himself as a whisky connoisseur, when I showed disdain for the neat drink he started mixing it with apple juice and all sorts to show me how

White chocolate mousse tart

I look forward to the weekend when you get the door-stopper version of the paper and my favourite bit are the supplement magazines. They are a great source of food inspiration for me. On the other hand some of their food articles can also cause me great annoyance. Thing is I am quite naive when it comes to health, I will believe in what the professionals say and the papers and magazines have all sorts of professionals giving a whole lot of conflicting information. It’s all too much for my fickle mind. This revolt started when I read about the owner of the hottest new green juice bar in London in one magazine and then in the next there were big, fat quotes by Tracy Anderson saying that juicing vegetables get rid of all the nutrients and fibre. Last week carbs were bad, this week sugar is the devil and I am reading about this lady with a complete sugar-free diet. Completely free. I don’t know what I admire the most, her motivation or her ability to find the strangest spreads for her rice cakes. I know they are not telling you to do anything but I feel that we’ve become a little too obsessed with

Lime and lemon tart

Exactly a year ago my friends got married and some of the guests brought to the reception a cake or tart to have a traditional Kaffee und Kuchen as it is known here in Germany. Coffee and cake often happens at around 3pm when families and friends meet up to eat something sweet. So a few days before the wedding I gave this a lot of thought and in the end decided on a lime and lemon tart, my husband’s favourite. At the reception there were several lovely cakes, but most of them with very simple decorations. And in less tan 5 minutes my tart was all gone and the few that had tried it were so impressed by it that they left the guests who hadn’t tried any feeling a tad frustrated. Do I need to say that I loved to hear all the compliments?!? My husband and I have been trying for months to have a get together, a garden party for friends as we have something very important to celebrate: I am pregnant and in four weeks we’ll finally meet this little boy who has been kicking my ribs for months. But my hormones made me cancel

Lavender and Cypress foot soak

I never thought I would say this but I cannot stand how hot it is in England at the moment. I actually heard an Australian girl complaining about the heat over here in the UK. If the Aussies are complaining then s**t just got real. It is one of the most amazing summers I have had in England since I arrived almost 12 years ago (yikes!) and the Brits go nuts when the weather is like this, mainly because it always seems too good to be true and you need to barbecue everything you have in your fridge and eat all the Magnums you can before the rain comes back. It is Carpe Diem as Keating envisioned it. I am myself planning a last minute beach holiday in the West coast, consequently all my sandals and dresses come out but I always face the same problem: my feet. A massively overlooked area in my body especially after months of hiding it under socks and boots they don’t always look their best in the first few months of sunshine. So I did a little research on the basics of homemade feet treatments as I was sick of my maintenance work which basically

Homemade lemonade with mint

Summer is nigh in the northern hemisphere. Every warm day that comes feels like a victory and we try to make the most of it, as if it were the only warm day of the year. The people who live in cold places know what I am talking about. Walks in the woods, pic nics, basking in the sun, barbecues, a stroll by the lake…I cannot wait! Last year I was after the perfect summer drink, something refreshing and easy to make. I love juices, I grew up spoiled for choice for tropical juices so there aren’t many juices here in Germany that I fancy. The recipe I am sharing with you is homemade lemonade with mint and it is delicious, easy and perfect for hot summer days. But be very careful, you might get addicted! Homemade lemonade with mint (makes 1,1l) 1l + 100ml of water 4 fresh mint sprigs 4 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp sugar 1. In a pan mix 100ml of water, the mint throroughly washed and the sugar. Bring it to boil on medium heat and then set aside to cool down. Add the lemon juice and take the mint off the mixture. This is
