Savory Cheese scones with cherry chutney

Cheese scones with cherry chutney

I have been struggling with the flu for the last two days. Deciding to walk around the Christmas market in the pouring rain does that to you. With the temperatures dropping and the sun becoming very shy this time of year it has been easy for me to sleep in. And sleeping in means that meals merge into one another and this gives me a great excuse to have brunch in bed. In England scones are often eaten as an afternoon treat, with tea and sweet toppings like clotted cream and jam, and although I will never say never to a scone with cream and jam I will always reach for the savoury ones first. Scones are not what first pops into people’s mind when they think of brunch, but for me that’s the perfect dish to have with coffee. Fluffy cakes with tangy cheese. Chutney is often paired with cheese scones but my choice of cherries as the fruit is unconventional for a chutney. It makes it a little sweeter than traditional recipes, but as a big fan of sweet and sour tastes this was a gamble that paid off. Sweet cherry chutney (yields around 300g) 250g frozen pitted cherries

Cherry bakewell smoothie [Dairy free]

The first heat wave of the year is here so the pub gardens are overflowing and everyone is having their lunches in public parks. My idea of enjoying sunshine is not sitting outside at a pub but sitting outside at my favourite coffee house enjoying an affogato and having a sweet tart. It is not cherry season yet, I learnt the hard way after having a huge craving for them and not finding them in the fresh fruit section in the supermarket. Thank goodness for frozen fruit and veg, am I right?!  Excited with the prospect of cherry tarts, cherry cakes and cherry jam I almost forgot I have to lose 6lbs before my wedding in August. So I made cherry bakewell tart transform into a dairy-free smoothie and I am hooked! The cherry bakewell tart is a British institution, it is a lovely combination of frangipane and cherries ladden with icing sugar. So have all the taste with a fraction of the calories in 2 easy steps! Cherry bakewell smoothie  150g pitted cherries 80g sugar 300ml almond milk 3 heaped tbsp of ground almonds Honey to taste 1. Put cherries, sugar and 100ml of water over low heat and

Amaretto sour

I am not a big drinker, have never been, in Brazil growing up in family gathering everyone just seemed to drink beer. It was too hot for wine. Also soon after I became of legal age I moved to England so my experience of alcoholic drinks really started here. And to say the English enjoy alcohol is an understatement. In college the boys mainly stick to Ales, Lagers and Bitters while girls dilute the alcohol in shandies and spritzers and your good old alcopops. University was a bit more hardcore, people would buy cheap vodka and cheap wine and make all kinds of concoctions with cranberry juice and coke and get whole pitchers of Vodka Red Bull. Jack Daniels was an absolute treat at a house party.  Found a bit tough to fit in as I don’t particularly like the taste of alcohol, I find beer and wine unbearable and don’t even get me started on people drinking stuff neat. I was once flirting with a boy at a party and he thought of himself as a whisky connoisseur, when I showed disdain for the neat drink he started mixing it with apple juice and all sorts to show me how
